Over 1000 people showed up to the lively festivities taking place at Neighbour’s Day last month on September 7.
Neighbour’s Day is the signature event run by the UNA. Itaims to provide an opportunity for the community to gather and share positive experiences.
This year, Neighbour’s Day showcased diverse performers and entertainers on the main stage. Notable highlights include a J-Pop group called Non-Sweet, Merlin the Magician, Indigenous singer and drummer Nova Kelly-Charles, and headliner band B’Boon – a 80s British Punk cover band.
Attendees also participated in a variety of activities from Bhangra dance workshops to inflatable games – there was something for everyone. The Community Marketplace boasted over 30 community groups and artisan vendors, with several food vendors and a beer/cider stand for refreshments.
Neighbour’s Day, first and foremost, fosters connections between residents, says Richard Watson, UNA director and board chair.
“This event not only brings our community together in celebration but also strengthens the bonds among residents, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and cooperation,” he said.
“The enthusiasm of that day and the positive feedback I’ve received since underscores the importance of such events in enhancing community life. I’m already looking forward to next year’s Neighbour’s Day.”
However, this event does not just bring together the participants. Josie Chow, Assistant Manager of Programs & Events at UNA, said there were 80 volunteers supporting this year’s event, which she describes as an all-time high.
“This is an all-time high for volunteer support and we greatly appreciate everyone who has helped make this event a success,” she said.
Overall, Neighbour’s Day provided a brilliant opportunity for volunteers and participants alike to meet, contribute, and enjoy the wide range of activities.
