UHill Club Channels Broadcast News

Students aim to use news videos for good

University Hill Secondary students have formed their own newsroom and are broadcasting school news in different languages on social media platforms.

The club’s mission is to inform students and parents of important school news and events. The students handle organizing, filming, editing, and presentation to produce the weekly and monthly videos.

Daniel Chen, a grade 11 student, founded the club in the 2023–24 academic year. He believes that by covering what’s going on within the school, the club can both inform fellow students and parents, and bring the school community closer.

Chen says it has been rewarding to work with a dedicated crew that works hard and has fun.

The students produce Weekly Bulletins as well as a Monthly Newsletter on Instagram and YouTube.

The broadcasts have been produced in English and Mandarin, and recently in French. To the club’s surprise, the French-language videos are being used in French class.

One crew member, Matthew Zhu, is a script writer and news presenter or anchor. He says he joined to experience what it was like behind the camera and has been pleasantly surprised.

The club has about 10 members with about 6–7 students involved in producing the news each week.

The club takes a creative approach to the news. The monthly newsletter is more serious, but the weekly broadcasts can take a humorous turn with informative skits.

Although the club will be on holidays for the summer, the students say they look forward to the upcoming school year, looking to improve the quality of the videos and produce them in more languages.

The club’s Instagram account is @uhill.newscast.
