Wesbrook Community Centre once again opened its doors to the community to celebrate Diwali on Oct. 27.
Known as the ‘festival of lights, Diwali has been celebrated for thousands of years and is one of the biggest and most important festivals in India. It signifies light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance, which is symbolized by clay lamps that people in India will light outside their homes.
The Diwali 2024 organizing team included Nidhi Raina, Jayshree Basivireddy, Manali Yadav, Nicky Foxhall and Angie Datt.
Raina said the event was well attended with rough 500 guests who participated in activities like making a traditional form of Indian art called a Rangoli, henna art, and learning how to wear a sari.
Indian snacks including samosas, sweets, and hot chai were prepared in the Wesbrook Community kitchen and served to guests.
“The audience was riveted as children and ladies from the neighbourhood put up a cultural performance to rival the ones from Bollywood,” Raina said. “The whole atmosphere was colourful, bright and welcoming.”
