Q+A
What is the most important issue facing the campus neighbourhoods today?
The most pressing issue is the rising demand for affordable, sustainable housing. UBC’s Campus Vision 2050 focuses heavily on market developments, but there is a critical need to balance this with more rental housing and community amenities to support long-term livability, especially for faculty, staff, and students who struggle with high living costs.
Is UBC building a livable, viable, safe, and environmentally-friendly community for residents through Campus Vision 2050? Why or why not?
UBC’s Campus Vision 2050 sets promising sustainability goals, but high-density market developments and insufficient green space raise concerns about livability. The plan targets double the neighbourhood housing, yet affordability challenges persist. Greater focus is needed on community-driven priorities to build a truly inclusive and viable neighbourhood.
What is the most pressing safety issue facing the campus neighbourhoods and where would you put your focus in addressing it?
The sharp rise in crime due to population growth is the most pressing safety issue. With RCMP call volumes increasing by 74 per cent but no added funding, I would focus on advocating for increased public safety resources and collaborating with UBC and local authorities to enhance community safety measures, such as improved lighting, patrolling, and resident awareness initiatives.
What are your thoughts on the UNA’s current fiscal situation?
Based on my understanding, the UNA’s current fiscal situation appears stable, and I have not identified any immediate concerns. While I am not a financial expert, I believe that maintaining sound financial practices is essential to sustaining our community services and initiatives. I would support transparent financial oversight and prudent budgeting to ensure long-term stability. Collaboration with stakeholders to align financial decisions with community priorities will remain a key focus.
How can the UNA better foster a sense of community and connection among residents?
The UNA can foster community by expanding multilingual events, engaging residents through volunteer initiatives, and leveraging digital platforms to connect across cultures and interests. Additionally, promoting family-oriented programs and environmental projects, such as community gardens and nature activities, can help build stronger bonds and a sense of belonging among residents.
